Hamburg

„Hamburg – my pearl“ as the locals say… Anyone who perceives Hamburg as a cold and classic city should have a look at our hot spots.

A Mecca for runners (key word: Außenalster), Hamburg is colourful, relaxed and most certainly the opposite of boring. Culture fans feel just as at home here as nature lovers, runners, photographers and musicians.

Schanzenviertel, the Elbe Philharmonic Concert Hall, Speicherstadt (warehouse district), Jungfernstieg… The list of the must-sees is long.

Check out the most important hot spots and be inspired by the insights of the Saucony City Guide!

My day job is at a major children’s hospital in London. I’m a born and bred Londoner on a running and fitness journey. London is the best city in the world, but of course, I would say that.

I’m a member of local London run crew, Run Dem Crew, and on a mission to run a sub three marathon. For me, the sheer size of London is the best thing, there’s always somewhere new to run.

„One of my favorite places to hang out in Hamburg is actually on a regular harbour ferry which starts at Landungsbrücken and goes all the way to Finkenwerder and passes most of Hamburgs harbour front. Just sit on deck, take a fresh breeze and enjoy the incredible view.”

"Around sunset you get crazy lights and can take great photos of my favourite steel giraffes."

Elbstrand

“Another favorite hang out spot of mine is the beach of the Elbe river. The beach starts near the museums harbor in Ovelgönne and goes all the way up till Teufelsbrück.”

"My favourite part is around the 'Alte Schwede' from where you again have a nice view on the harbor on the other side and can watch big ships passing by all day."

„Running? Stretching? Working out? Nothing fits better than the harbour for this. Pick any place from Landungsbrücken down to Blankenese to do your exercises and run along the beautiful Hamburg harbour front.”

Alster

„As a native of Hamburg, there is no better place for me than the Alster. Apart from my own home I don’t spend anymore time anywhere else than at the Alster. Surrounded by many cafes, restaurants & boat rentals you always find a different place to relax. There are even some barbecue spots!”

„Sometimes the wind there feels like a light ocean breeze."

Starbucks

„Hanging Out & lots of coffee!  On a relaxing sunday, I enjoy strolling through the city. I love to take a break at my favorite coffee place Starbucks, overlooking the Alster.”

Harvestehude

„Morning, noon or dusk – from the small Alster Canals in Harvestehude to the Outer Alster. With a view like this, running is even more fun! The Hotspot for every athlete. Windsurfing, stand up paddling or rowing… almost everything!”

„My favourite time to work out is at sunrise or at sunset – like a dream!"

Heritage

„If you are looking for a great bar and restaurant to go out, I recommend the Heritage at the top of the Le Méridien Hamburg. You get an amazing view over the Alster (worthwhile in every weather) and can easily move between the restaurant and the bar depending on your mood an needs!”

St. Pauli

„I’m showing you one of my favorite running tracks. The tour goes along the St. Pauli Reeperbahn through the Alter Elbpark, up the stairs to the venerable Bismarck memorial. Along the little path ‘Bei der Erholung’ you can enjoy the view of the Elbe until it goes back to St. Pauli via the Davidstraße with the famous Davidwache police station.

This run also takes you to many sights worth seeing of the beautiful Hanseatic City of Hamburg!”

„This route, with its grass, gravel path, a steep incline and many stairs, gives a lot of variety!"

Haddoc Shop

„Here is a tip for you if you are in the city and feel like shopping. At Haddoc Shop Beim Grünen Jäger 7 between St. Pauli and the Schanzenviertel you will find selected sneakers, streetwear and accessories. And among other things a large choice of Saucony sneakers. It is, in a way, a small art gallery at the same time, with street art of local artists such as of the sprayer FROST, known from the 187 Straßenbande. Swing by!”

„Leave yourself plenty of time because there is a lot to discover in this little store."

Park Fiction

  • Hang Out

madbutphat

„One of my favourite hangout spots in Hamburg, the Park Fiction in St. Pauli. Right next to the Elbe but still far away from the usual tourism. The often sung about ‘Palmen aus Plastik’ will lead you the way to this in 2003 artificially constructed park. With streetball court, dog meadows and plenty of space to just hang around and relax on the flying carpet (a wavelike turf). In the local neighbourhood you can find the historic Hafenstraße, as well as the newly established Golden Pudel club and the brilliant Salt & Silver restaurant.  If you are in the area, stop by!”

„Here, party people that have just come out of a club encounter neighbours during their Sunday stroll. A wild mixture."

Patio

„Fancy some tasty drinks, a glass of wine or tapas? During the week or on weekends? One of my favorite spots in Hamburg Winterhude is: Patio – a restaurant that offers unique tapas – small and large – and some tasty drinks and cocktails at its awesome bar!”

„The bartenders even mix personalized drinks that are not on the menu or create something completely new for you."

La Bottega Lentini

madbutphat

For the category ‘Go Out’ I have a hotspot for you that is, for a change, outside of St. Pauli. The restaurant La Bottega Lentini at Eppendorfer Weg 267 is absolutely worth the trip. Here, with the old-fashioned brothers Francesco and Salvatore, you can’t only eat really well, but also have a good time and party!

Hint: When Francesco takes off his italian slang and comes to your table with the words ‘Let’s drink some Sambuca, dude!’, you know that it’s going to be a long night. But watch out, don’t ask him about the latest results of the HSV…”
